MN Labor Leaders: Fix Ailing Auto Industry with a Health Care Bailout

A leading Minnesota labor representative has some advice for putting the ailing auto industry back on the road to economic recovery, and it begins with gaining control of skyrocketing health care costs.

Elliot Seide, president of Minnesota’s American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council, Number 5, says he’s hopeful the incoming Obama administration signals a new direction for health care policy. He says such a direction should include health care solutions for all workers before resorting to bailouts for the ailing American auto industry.

"We think, in this economic crisis that’s beset the nation, and the change in administrations, there’s opportunity for reform of health care. If we’re going to solve the economic crisis, we need to reform health care."

The auto industry reportedly spends more for employee health care than it does for steel to produce cars. Solving the high cost of health care, says Seide, would go far to relieve the burden on all American companies and workers.

"Our country has the best doctors, the best hospitals, the best research and the best medicine. There’s no reason we can’t provide quality, affordable health care for all. Every other industrial nation does," he said

The nation’s three big automobile makers appealed for federal help after suffering huge losses in the most recent quarter that threaten their solvency. A bailout for the auto industry is far from certain. Even if Democrats muster enough political support, President Bush could veto the package.
