UW Forum Looks at Money in Supreme Court Races

Madison, WI - A forum at the University of Wisconsin Law School on Tuesday examines the influence of money in the state's Supreme Court races, which have been marred by negative campaigning in the past two years. Andrea Kaminski, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, says two bruising election campaigns for spots on the court have tarnished the public's perception of fairness and justice.

"People have to have faith that our Supreme Court is answerable to the law and the constitution, not to moneyed interests."

The last two years of negative campaigning for the state Supreme Court have created an image problem, according to Kaminski.

"The perception of justice and the perception of fairness--those are as important as the actual fact."

The law school forum is about discussing ways to keep our democracy healthy, Kaminski explains.

"It's a good way for citizens to get together and have an open discussion about how to have more confidence in our courts."

Kaminski says the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin supports publicly financed elections as a possible solution. Other alternatives to be discussed at the forum include a process of judicial appointment through merit selection. The speakers panel includes Wisconsin Supreme Court justices, an editorial page editor and the head of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

The forum runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Law School, Room 2260.
