En esta temporada del año, la Tierra del Encanto puede convertirse en un campamento invernal para muchas familias. Muchas personas en Nuevo México pierden dinero--parece que se escapa por las tuberías que traen la calefacción al hogar. Los expertos dicen que hay un gran número de reparaciones gratis o de costos bajos que pueden ser implementadas en las casas y así incrementar la eficiencia energética del hogar y bajar los costos mensuales de la calefacción.

Scott Morgan del canal de televisión Casa y Jardín (Home and Garden) dice que se empieza simplemente con bajar la temperatura del termostato del calentador de agua.

"Típicamente están a 120 grados y con solo bajarlo a 115 grados te ahorrará entre el 10 y el 20 por ciento, algo bastante significativo."

Dice Morgan que puede uno encontrar fácilmente los espacios donde se escapa el aire caliente pasando una vela prendida enfrente de las orillas de las ventanas y puertas.

"Donde parpadee la luz de la vela, aunque uno no vea si hay una gotera o un espacio abierto, es buena indicación que está entrando aire por ahí desde afuera y necesita asegurarse que ese espacio quede bien sellado."

Recomienda usar silicón, enmasillado o espuma de goma como maneras baratas y fáciles de sellar lugares donde se escapa el aire. Menciona que es importante asegurarse que el desván del hogar esté bien aislado. Por una pequeña cantidad de dinero recomienda cambiar del forro de fibra de vidrio por unas tablas especiales para aislar que pueden ser pegadas con cinta adhesiva en las orillas creando un cierre más hermético con menos escape del aire caliente.
