Will New Ag Chief be Family Farmer Friendly?

Recent reports that former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack is the frontrunner for President-Elect Barack Obama’s agriculture secretary worry some small farmer advocates who hope that a new federal administration means less privilege for Big Ag.

Jennifer Blecha, with the Minnesota Project, a non-profit, local food advocacy organization, remembers Obama’s stance during the campaign indicated a willingness to shift the long-standing accommodation of ag industry giants, such as Cargill and ADM.

"His focus on green jobs, on energy independence, and on climate are things that need to be addressed from an agriculture perspective."

Blecha believes Vilsack’s strong connections to biotechnology, insecticide and large pork producing industries could make it difficult for him to break from previous agriculture policy, though she understands the need for gradual changes in the industry.

"We should not abandon all the big subsidy programs and things that we’ve had going for decades. That would be disastrous. You can’t do that overnight, but, over four or eight years we could gradually shift those things, percentage by percentage."

Blecha and her group point to two other potential candidates as possibly more-viable, including National Farmer's Union chief Tom Buis, who she says would likely be the greatest champion for independent farmers, and former Representative Charles Stenholm of Texas.

Congressional Quarterly cites Obama transition team members and others saying Vilsack is the top pick for the job. The former governor enjoys bi-partisan support from both of Iowa's U.S. senators.
