"Gay American Smokeout" Takes on #1 Killer

November 20, 2008

Denver - It's the leading cause of death for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, which is why the GLBT Community Center of Colorado has organized today's "Gay American Smokeout" to urge GLBT Coloradans to quit using tobacco. Cathy Busha with the Center says GLBT folks have been targeted by marketing from tobacco companies for years.

"We're used to talking about other public health concerns and issues in our community, but actually tobacco is the number one way that GLBT people die."

Busha notes free and friendly help is available for those that want to quit by calling Colorado's "quitline."

"We've worked with the quitline and trained them to be culturally competent to serve the GLBT community."

She worries many GLBT people in Colorado might sometimes turn to things like cigarettes to help deal with stress.

"When you're marginalized as a community, it can impact your sense of safety, well-being and self-worth, and unfortunately, sometimes people turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms."

The American Cancer Society estimates 30,000 GLBT people nationwide die each year from tobacco-related diseases. Information and help for quitting is available through a Colorado-based website,
