Sioux Falls, SD - A new Web site to help South Dakota parents who have children with mental health issues launched this week. Dr. Susan Randall, executive director of South Dakota Voices for Children, the group behind the site, says the "Parents' Guide to Mental Health Services in South Dakota" targets families with children from infancy through their teen years.

She says it will be a helpful tool for South Dakota parents who are having a difficult time responding to their children's emotional and behavioral problems.

"This is National Family Week, an important time to think about the emotional and behavioral health of your children and of nurturing that health. Intervening early, getting help for your child, is the best step to take because it can help children turn around and move on with their lives. Kids are incredibly resilient, but a lot of times they need some help getting through tough times."

Robin Prunty, whose daughter was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder in her teens, says it's difficult for parents to deal with children's mental illness on their own. She believes the new guide should help them navigate through the resources they need to help their children.

"You know, I never had all the answers, and there were often times when I had no answers. But I knew that in there somewhere was my daughter who could be well. And I knew that we had to keep going, that we had to keep fighting. None of us choose to have a mental health condition but we can choose as parents how we're going to help our children."

The new web site features a directory of mental health providers and services as well as contact information and other resources. It can be accessed at sdkidsmentalhealth.org>/a>
