Nuevo México - La federación debería poner su energía en otra parte. Ésta es la voz de políticos locales, ciudadanos preocupados y grupos ambientalistas sobre un plan para construir el famoso "corredor de energía", con un ancho de hasta tres cuartos de milla, que se planea abrir cerca de Las Cruces. Según un estudio reciente del Departamento de Energía, éstos corredores no impactan significativamente al medio ambiente.

Nathan Small trabaja para la New Mexico Wilderness Alliance (Alianza Vida Silvestre de Nuevo México) y también presta sus servicios en el gobierno de la ciudad. Dice que entiende la necesidad de líneas de transmisión, pero se opone al asentamiento propuesto de uno de los corredores, el cual cortaría una franja entre la segunda mayor ciudad de Nuevo México y las montañas cercanas del Órgano.

"Seguramente pueden representar un beneficio, pero localizarlas entre una área metropolitana que está en pleno crecimiento y la montaña que esa población ve como su centro natural,… creo que ahí tienes un problema, tienes una dificultad."

También comenta Small que otro problema con el plan del corredor es que entre sus prioridades no tiene la de conducir energía obtenida de fuentes renovables.

"Si ya estamos pensando en agregar estos corredores de tres cuartos de milla de ancho, sin considerar prioritario lo que prácticamente todos están de acuerdo que será el futuro de la energía, parece que nos sobrepasamos un poco."

El estudio mencionado encontró que los corredores no tendrían un impacto ambiental significativo. Small dice que tal como están propuestos ahora, el corredor pasaría a través de áreas naturales protegidas y áreas reservadas para el desarrollo futuro. Dice que el gobierno debería encontrar una mejor ruta para ese corredor, y convertir en prioridad el hecho de usarlo para energía renovable.
