Des Moines, IA – This time of year, when families gather for the holidays, may be a great opportunity to discuss long-term care needs for older relatives. The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals is hosting a series of forums across the state beginning today for Iowans to learn more about nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

AARP Iowa Senior State Director Bruce Koeppl says it helps to have good information.

"If you have that information before you reach those critical moments in life, it prepares you for those kinds of conversations and you know you are making a good decision."

He says one of the most common concerns is safety of loved ones, and the forums can answer questions about how the state protects residents in these facilities.

"People wonder what the oversight role of the state is, in addition to what happens within those facilities and what they are capable of doing themselves. When they know that, they are going to feel more comfortable making those tough decisions."

Koeppl says Iowa is known for its quality of long-term care facilities, and much of that is because the state is not only doing its job of oversight, but also because families are involved in making sure relatives are being cared for properly.

The first forums are today at the Montgomery County YMCA, Red Oak, and at Iowa Western Community College, Council Bluffs. Other forums will be in Sioux City and Spencer, Dec. 16; Des Moines, Dec. 18; Ottumwa and West Burlington, Dec. 19; Cedar Rapids and Coralville, Jan. 5; Bettendorf and Dubuque, Jan. 6; Calmar and Mason City, Jan. 7; and Waterloo and Marshalltown, Jan. 8.
