Checking the List ... for North Dakota Stroke Patients

Bismarck, ND – Stroke is the third leading cause of death in North Dakota and one of the leading causes of disability. A report just out in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, finds that stroke patients do much better in hospitals that have adopted an American Heart Association program called "Get with the Guidelines."

According to June Herman, North Dakota advocacy director for the American Heart Association, the program is a lot like a pilot going over a checklist before takeoff.

"We have highly skilled teams providing good care, but by going through a checklist they find there's a much greater compliance with the stroke guidelines that exist nationally."

Because a licensing fee is involved, Herman says few North Dakota hospitals use the program. The Association hoped the fee would be part of the governor's budget, so it would be available to every hospital, but in the end it was not included.

"With this study, we’re going to be pushing even harder during the legislative session to see that--because of the new data that's available--perhaps we can still get it in through the legislative Appropriation Committee process."

Some of the guidelines on the checklist include the administration of intravenous clot-busting drugs within two hours of stroke onset; medication to prevent blood clots within 48 hours of admission; treatment for irregular heartbeat and high cholesterol; and counseling to quit smoking.
