MA Health Resolution Recommendations

December 29, 2008

Worcester, MA – Resolving to improve one's health is a frequent New Year's resolution. To make it stick this time, The Partnership for Healthcare Excellence suggests three actions that should be easy to keep in 2009. First,
update medication lists, including vitamins and herbal supplements. Second, if you go to a gym to get in better shape, wipe down exercise equipment to avoid infections. Third, says Dr. Robert Klugman, medical director of managed care at UMass Memorial Medical Center, write down a list of questions and symptoms to discuss with your doctor before the next appointment.

"People get a little nervous and stressed, and they forget things when they're in their physician's office. Be prepared for your doctor visits, and certainly feel free to speak up and ask your questions."

Be sure to bring a copy of your medication list for your doctor, Klugman adds, and make one for your pharmacist, too.

Keep in mind that a common cold, the flu, or even antibiotic-resistant bacteria thrive on shared surfaces, he says, such as those in the gym, including shared athletic equipment.

"Personally, you have a responsibility to be careful about surfaces you touch. Disinfecting and things like that are really very important this time of year."
