Support Growing for an Economy Driven by Clean Energy

Minneapolis, MN – Dozens of organizations from Minnesota and nationwide are calling on President-elect Barack Obama to use clean energy to rebuild the nation's economy. They say that would cut oil imports, create millions of "green jobs" and reduce global-warming pollution.

In Minnesota, J. Drake Hamilton with Fresh Energy says the nation must rethink its policies and redirect its investments.

"We need to take on this economic crisis in a way that says it is clear that the old energy economy is not working for America. So, from the bootstraps, we need to figure out how to get a new, clean-energy economy."

She says steps include investing in clean industries, raising vehicle mileage standards and increasing energy efficiency in homes and buildings. Hamilton says that would reduce pollution and lower energy bills by billions.

What we must do, Hamilton continues, is to move away from reliance on fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas because they're dirty, expensive and non-renewable.

"We need to take the unlimited sources of energy -- including wind power, solar power, geothermal energy and hydropower -- invest more in those and build the infrastructure around those clean-energy technologies."

Critics say such investments would be expensive, but Hamilton contends the most expensive thing would be to do nothing. She adds that the Obama economic plan has strong public support: a Zogby poll finds almost 80 percent of Americans see clean energy as the key to the country's economic health.

Among others promoting this clean-energy economic policy is the Save Our Environment coalition. Its members include the National Audubon Society, National Wildlife Federation, PEW Environmental Group, League of Conservation Voters and Union of Concerned Scientists.
