Reporte: Los niños de California, los más pobres y menos asegurados

El Children's Defense Fund (Fondo para la Defensa de los Niños) (CDF) afirma que California es el estado con el mayor número de niños viviendo en la pobreza, y el segundo en cantidad de niños sin seguro médico, después de Texas.

Las cifras que refleja el reporte anual "State of America's Children" ("Situación de los Niños de América") demuestran, sin duda, que los problemas de California van más allá de su creciente déficit presupuestal y tasa de desempleo, y tocan a una infancia que también sufre.

Ed Shelleby, vocero del CDF, organización que publica dicho reporte, dice que otra estadística alarmante de California es el creciente costo de las guarderías, que son centros en los que los padres de familia se apoyan mientras trabajan, y también preparan a sus hijos para la escuela.

"En California realmente cuesta más mandar un niño de preescolar a la guardería que mandar a un estudiante un año a la universidad pública, casi una y media veces más."

A nivel nacional, los niños pobres han aumentado en cerca de 500 mil, llegando a 13.3 millones, y se espera que la cantidad siga creciendo durante la recesión. Por esa razón, opina Shelleby, es importante que en el plan federal de estímulos económicos se incluyan subsidios para proteger a los niños.

"Queremos de veras que el Congreso y la nueva administración garanticen que esos niños tengan los recursos que necesitan, que garanticen que menos niños caigan en la pobreza, que menos niños pierdan su cobertura de salud, así que éste realmente será un año coyuntural, no sólo para California sino también para el resto del país."

El reporte encontró también que el 75 por ciento de los niños californianos de cuarto grado no tienen un desempeño acorde a su nivel escolar, ni en lectura ni en matemáticas.
