Louisville, KY – Food and clothing drives, community center repairs, and spending time with those in senior centers are examples of how Kentuckians are meeting the National Day of Service call.

Beth Huss is organizing a project in Louisville for the Sierra Club. She called the mayor's office and found out some hands-on work is needed along the River Walk.

"'Often needs cleaning up,' I think is how they worded it. A small group of people are signed up to come out and clean up, pick up litter along the River Walk."

Huss says it's important to collect trash near the river, because most of it eventually ends up the water where it can hurt wildlife and water quality.

There's also an Ohio River pathway cleanup in Ghent. More than 11,000 projects are going on nationwide. Congress added the National Day of Service to Martin Luther King, Jr., Day in 1994.
