Sierra Club: Renewable Energy is Michigan's Future

Lansing, MI - The debate over Michigan's energy future is heating up. Eight coal plants are proposed for Michigan, with proponents believing they are more reliable in the long-term than renewable sources. However, the Michigan Sierra Club is fearful coal power plants will have a long-term impact on air and water, while contributing to global warming.

Sierra Club state director, Anne Woiwode, says Michigan has the potential to lead the nation in renewable energy sources with a manufacturing-based workforce that can build windmills and solar panels.

"These are skilled workers who know how to run factories, building very similar kinds of things, using similar kinds of skills and machinery as have been used in the automobile factories."

While coal plants can't produce electricity until construction is completed, adds Wiowode, renewable energy sources can be ready to produce energy even as they are being built.

"Wind turbines can be put up incrementally. If you put up one wind turbine, it can start generating electricity immediately. They're quicker to build and they're faster to get online. Same with solar."

Woiwode says other advantages to moving toward renewable energy include creating more jobs in the state and keeping local dollars in Michigan.
