Grassley Will Have Pivotal Role in Stimulus Passage

February 2, 2009

Des Moines, IA – This week, debate in the U.S. Senate is expected to be almost entirely about the 800 billion dollar stimulus package that passed the House on a party line vote. Whether it is approved in the Senate may rest with Iowa Senator Charles Grassley, ranking Republican member of the powerful Finance Committee. Amy Logsdon with the Iowa Citizen Action Network says Grassley is well respected by members of both parties.

"He has a long reputation for making smart, practical decisions, for being not influenced by partisan politics and for doing what's right for the people of Iowa. We need him to keep up that tradition."

Logsdon says many senators of both parties are concerned about whether all the spending will result in a real stimulus to the economy. She says Moody's "" Web site, which provides economic research for business and government, has concluded that some parts of the plan are better at that than others.

"He shows that the increase in the Gross Domestic Product for each dollar invested in a temporary increase to food stamps, for example, yields $1.73."

On the other hand, she says, Moody's found that the Accelerated Depreciation on Equipment, one of the tax incentives for corporations, would only yield 27 cents for every dollar invested.
