NH Interest in “Fiscal Summit” Today

Concord, NH – President Obama holds a "Fiscal Summit" today (Monday) to talk about how to balance the federal budget, in the long-term. Pre-summit talk has focused on cutting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid -- which is raising eyebrows, in New Hampshire and around the country.

Nancy Altman is a Social Security expert who says it's one program that should not on the table, because it currently runs annual surpluses of about $200 billion. She also sees Social Security as invaluable at a time when Americans have lost an estimated $2 trillion of private pension wealth. However, she sees a healthcare system crisis reflected in rising costs for public programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid, as well as private health insurance.

"We have healthcare costs that are rising much more rapidly than income, and that's true for private costs as well as public."

Altman is pleased that the president is including healthcare in the summit; she believes healthcare reform is the key to eliminating the long-term deficit.

At the National Association of Social Workers' New Hampshire chapter, Executive Director Stephen Gorin is interested in making sure the big budget discussions remain clearly in public view. While early proposals from one group call for fast-tracking decisions about Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, Gorin disagrees.

"I think the other thing we need to avoid is any kind of a fast-track process. It's something that needs to be debated, and it needs to be done out in the open."

Other summit topics at the White House today include taxes, government contracts and procurement, and the budget process.
