Chicago Replacing Rahm Forum Expected to Draw Hundreds

Chicago, IL - Some are calling it the race to replace Rahm; 21 candidates are vying for the Illinois Fifth District Congressional seat, vacated by Representative Rahm Emmanuel when he became President Obama's chief of staff. Tonight, hundreds of residents of the Chicago north side district will participate in a candidates' forum expected to focus on the issues of health care, immigration and affordable housing.

The assistant director of the New Americans Initiative, Luvia Quinones, says that with just eight days until the primary election for the seat, it's essential that residents are educated on the candidates.

"We're just hoping our local politicians understand the different issues that are important to the community, whether it be health care, immigration reform or affordable housing."

Quinones, whose organization advocates for immigrants desiring to gain U.S. citizenship and for those who have just attained it, says many residents of the district are looking for a candidate who is willing to work on immigration reform.

"There's a lot of families being separated because of our current immigration system; we're hoping that gets changed and there's actually a path to citizenship."

Quinones says the ideal candidate would be interested in working toward better immigrant integration in the community, offering immigrant families access to English classes, workplace development and on-the-job training.

Given recent events in Illinois politics, Quinones says voters need to be more engaged than ever in the political process.

"To us from the community, the previous congressman wasn't accessible, so we're hoping this person does care about the issues important to the community and is a lot more receptive to us."

More than 600 residents of the Fifth District are expected at tonight's forum. It begins at 6:30 p.m. at the auditorium at Northeastern Illinois University.
