AARP Makes Tax Time Less Taxing For Californians

In this time of hard times, it's hard to beat "free" when it comes to hiring a tax preparer, and that's the offer to California's low- and middle-income residents who could use the help. There's special attention for those aged 60 and older. The AARP Tax-Aide program is run by Internal Revenue Service-trained and certified tax preparers who are available throughout the state.

Christina Clem, associate state director for AARP California, says this is the 41st year for the program.

"Considering the way the current economy is, and with people belt-tightening and trying to find ways to save money, we really want to let folks know that this is a free service that is out there."

Clem says some of the sites are staffed with bilingual volunteers. She also says many of the sites offer electronic filing that will allow taxpayers to receive their refunds much faster.

"People who are interested can go to the AARP Web site and can find locations in the area; they just give a call and set up an appointment, make sure they have their tax documents, and a free tax return is on the way."

AARP is prepared for more Californians to take advantage of their free service, including those "returning taxpayers" who filed just to get last year's economic stimulus check. Clem says many of those people, who hadn't had to file in years, also discovered they were eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, which they may also be eligible for again this year.
