Concord, NH – Congressional leaders are promising to make room on their calendar this summer for energy and climate change legislation. The two topics lead among President Obama's agenda items. Environmental groups say the legislative priorities are good for New Hampshire, which is recognized for its leadership in energy efficiency programs.

Joe Mendelson, director of global warming policy for the National Wildlife Federation, says New Hampshire is one of a few states positioned to profit, and to help residents save money in the "new energy economy."

"New Hampshire is one of the leading states in dealing with energy efficiency. And, the fact is, if you use less electricity, you’re going to pay less out of your pocketbook."

Some say expanding clean energy production and distribution, as well as charging fees for climate change pollution, will mean higher prices for customers. Mendelson argues there will be some protection for Granite Staters.

"When we transition, it’s not necessarily going to be easy, but we can use some of the money we get through a cap-and-trade system to help make sure consumers don’t bear the brunt of this."

Petitions with more than 1,000 New Hampshire resident signatures have been delivered to the state’s congressional delegation in support of federal clean energy proposals. Critics of the push for energy legislation say the economic crisis should take precedence, but supporters point out that addressing energy is part of the economic solution.
