A "Top 10 List" for Health Care Reform in Rural Iowa

Des Moines, IA – As Congress prepares to debate healthcare reform, the Iowa-based Center for Rural Affairs has produced what it calls a "Top Ten" list of why changes to the healthcare system are critically needed in rural Iowa. The Center's input comes as the Obama administration conducts a series of "listening sessions" around the country to gather input on how to reform the nation’s healthcare system. One such session was held Monday in Des Moines.

Jon Bailey, director of the Rural Research and Analysis Program for the Center for Rural Affairs, says the list is almost the same as it is for urban areas, with a few exceptions.

"The rates of uninsured are higher in rural places. People tend to remain uninsured for longer periods of time, but maybe as important is the rate of under-insured."

That is the number of rural Iowans who have health insurance that does not provide sufficient coverage to help with most of their medical expenses, he explains. In rural Iowa, providing health insurance could be an economic springboard, adds Bailey.

"We need to have an entrepreneurial economy that works for rural communities, and healthcare is always the Number One barrier to people becoming entrepreneurs or expanding their businesses and creating jobs."

The "Top Ten" list of concerns also includes healthcare provider shortages in rural areas, an aging population that is sicker and at greater overall risk, and reduced access to mental health, emergency services and other types of healthcare.
