Albany, NY - New York groups are among more than 100 organizations forming a nationwide coalition pressing for congressional approval of President Obama's budget. "Rebuild and Renew America Now" is an effort by progressive nonprofits, research groups, unions, and faith-based organizations around the country.

Ron Deutsch of New Yorkers for Fiscal Fairness believes poor and middle-class New Yorkers especially will benefit from steps toward healthcare reform, added unemployment benefits, aid to early and higher education, and green energy initiatives.

"I think there's a lot in this package for New York, and I think New Yorkers should be really trying to help move this forward."

Among the New York members of the coalition are Citizen Action New York and the Long Island Progressive Coalition. According to Deutsch, it is gearing up quickly.

"We need to make sure that when Congress is ready to act on this, they will act affirmatively. So, it's going to be our job over the next weeks to really push this agenda and push this budget, with members of our congressional delegation."

Republican critics say Obama's budget calls for too much spending and large tax increases on the wealthy; they predict it will balloon the national debt. To counter those views, some of the same techniques used last month in garnering support for the president's stimulus package will be employed, says Deutsch.

"First of all, we have to make the public aware of why this is so important. So, we'll be holding numerous press conferences, we'll be trying to get our grassroots folks to be sending letters to the editor, op-ed pieces, meetings with editorial boards across the state. Then we'll be calling, and sending email and faxes to, members of Congress.”

The coalition's Web site is already up, at www.rebuildandrenew.org.
