Rural MN Wants a Voice in the Healthcare Debate

Lyons, NE – Rural communities in Minnesota and nationally need a seat at the health-care table. That's the advisory from the Center for Rural Affairs, which says small towns should have a big voice in discussions about what reforms to make. Jon Bailey, director of rural research and analysis, says rural residents are not well served by the current system.

"Rural communities have less access to so many things involved in the health-care system, and there are more uninsured and more underinsured. Rural people generally pay more and get less."

He notes the Obama administration is holding "listening sessions" to get feedback on how to fix the nation's health care system, so this is a good time for rural America to weigh in. He says whatever program emerges will have huge implications and has to work for everyone, wherever they live.

Bailey says the Center for Rural Affairs held several public forums to help identify rural health-care reform priorities. The economy ranked high, because small businesses in rural areas are drowning in medical expenses.

"We need to have an affordable system that allows people to start their own businesses, to create jobs for their employees in rural Minnesota and rural America and provide health-care benefits for them."

He says other issues rural communities will focus on include the shortage of health-care providers and the lack of mental-health services or access to the latest medical technology. Bailey says quality, affordable health care is critical, because it's the cornerstone of a strong community that attracts new residents, supports Main Street businesses and offers an attractive lifestyle.
