Chicago, Illinois – On this sixth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad, local activists are joining the launch of a national campaign to hold President Obama to his pledge to end the U.S. occupation in Iraq by January 1, 2012. The with the American Friends Service Committee has begun to count down the last one thousand days until the last troops will be withdrawn.

Spokeswoman Mary Zerkel says they would like to see the timetable shortened so the healing and rebuilding can begin.

"Each day the war continues, there are going to be Iraqis killed, we are going to see U.S. troops killed and we’re going to be spending upwards of $720 million per day on continuing the war. All of those things are inexcusable and we’d like to see them end as soon as possible."

The United States needs to live up to it’s obligations in a post-war Iraq and not repeat its mistakes, adds Zerkel.

"We’d like to see the U.S. support an Iraqi-led reconstruction. And then we’d also like to see that there would be no detours. We want to make sure we’re not just taking our troops out of Iraq and then sending them directly to Afghanistan."

Among other statistics, the Web site www.CountdownToWithdrawal.Org, is tracking the troop departure from Iraq, the number of U.S. soldiers killed, and the number of Iraqis killed in war.

President Obama has pledged to honor the bilateral agreement with Iraq to remove all combat troops by August of 2010 and all remaining troops by January 1, 2012. Some opponents of the agreement say the timetable is too fast for withdrawal and could lead to an escalation in U.S. air power over Iraq.
