Pistachio Recall Now Includes Tennessee

Nashville, TN – In just the past 24 months, salmonella has contaminated tomatoes, cantaloupes, peppers, peanut butter paste and now pistachio nuts. This week the pistachio recall was expanded and now includes roasted, salted pistachios distributed in Tennessee. As salmonella discoveries around the country have increased, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not increased its inspection schedule.

Nashville attorney Mark Chalos says the pistachio contamination, initially resulting in the recall of two million pounds of nuts, is part of a pattern.

"What we're seeing is products that should never have been sold, and only after children and families being harmed does the government take action."

The Setton Pistachio plant in Fresno, California, the second-largest pistachio processor in the country, has been shut down voluntarily since last week.

Chalos says Kraft Foods should be applauded for its diligence in detecting salmonella at the Setton facility, but he believes inspection by food companies is not the best way to insure the public's health.

"The food safety program needs another look; it's had some fairly significant failures over the past few years."

President Obama has called for reviewing FDA operations, with the goal of improving public safety.
