Report: Healthcare Crisis Real in NH

Washington, D.C. – The latest check-up on health insurance shows that the system is still not working for many Granite Staters. A new report released by Families USA finds that 279,000 New Hampshirites under age 65 were uninsured at some point during 2007-2008. That's almost one of every four people in the state, and more than 80 percent of them came from working families.

Stephen Gorin, the executive director of the New Hampshire Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, says he reckons the situation is getting worse.

"We are talking really about working people who are undergoing this, and given the economic down-turn, I think these numbers are probably much higher today."

Gorin says that most people's health insurance is tied to their jobs, and with unemployment figures rising, conditions are probably far worse than the numbers this report suggests.

A major part of the solution to the health care crisis should be providing people with a choice between public and private health plans, says Sarah Chaisson Warner, the executive director of the New Hampshire Citizens Alliance.

"The option of having a public health insurance plan, which can even compete directly with private health insurance, is really what I think Americans are looking for in reform."

Chaisson Warner says that by providing a public insurance option, accessibility will increase and costs will decrease, based on healthy market competition. The Obama administration is pushing for a health care reform bill to be passed this year.

As part of the American Recovery Investment Act, there is a new law which provides a 65 percent subsidy towards the cost of continuing health care for certain COBRA and New Hampshire continuation-eligible residents. Final guidelines for that assistance are expected to be released by April 17th.
