Laramie, WY – Wyomingites representing various groups who often don't work together are crediting their precedent-setting cooperation for leading to the passage of the Wyoming Range Legacy Act. The Act would prevent any new oil and gas leasing in portions of the 100-mile-long Wyoming Range and, should an existing lease expire or be retired, would put that area off limits to re-leasing. The supporting groups, including democrats and republicans, call the success a "big tent" approach to conservation and plan to explore how it might serve other community concerns during a discussion Tuesday night at the University of Wyoming.

Wyoming State Sen. Mike Massie (D-Laramie) is leading the discussion.

"This was a coalition of groups in the Upper Green River Basin that normally don’t work with each other, and who developed a solution by talking with each other, rather than depending upon Washington to make the decision."

Sen. Massie says it’s a new model of conservation that has been used successfully in Idaho and New Mexico, as well. Ranchers, outfitters, sportsmen, small business owners, conservation groups, and the faith community were involved in the Wyoming Range project - and Sen. Massie says everyone is learning there are additional benefits in working together.

"The collaboration goes well beyond just simply a discussion of that particular public lands issue. It eventually will be reflected in so many other decisions in our community."

The Wyoming Range Legacy Act directs existing oil and gas leases to be purchased from the leaseholders so the land will be left undeveloped. Critics of the act are concerned about the restriction on oil and gas drilling.

The discussion, On Sacred Ground - Celebrating the Wyoming Range, is April 21, in the University of Wyoming Classroom Building, 133., at 6:00 p.m.
