Santa Fe – Hoy es el Día de la Tierra número 39, y en la Tierra de Encanto la fecha tiene especial significado y motivo de celebración. El director de políticas de la Campaña por la Vida Silvestre de América, Doug Scott, fue uno de los estudiantes graduados presentes en la mesa directiva que organizó el primer Día de la Tierra, en 1970, guardado a nivel nacional.

"La gente de Nuevo México tenía muchas razones para celebrar el Día de la Tierra un poco anticipadamente, el 30 de marzo, cuando el Presidente Obama firmó la Ley para que el área rural de Sabinoso fuera área silvestre protegida."

El árera está localizada cerca de Las Vegas y ofrece en su cañón paisajes impresionantes, previamente inaccesibles al público. El mismo paquete legislativo también determinó la protección de algunos sitios prehistóricos al sur de Nuevo México. Las nuevas iniciativas fueron parte de uno de los más grandes paquetes legislativos relativos a la creación de nuevas designaciones silvestres en los últimos 15 años.

Scott dice que muchas de las herramientas legales que protegen el medio ambiente de la nación fueron llevadas a rango de ley por el Congreso en los sesentas y los setentas, como fueron las leyes del Aire Limpio y del Agua Limpia.

"Hoy en día son el fundamento para intentar integrar una política energética más racional y una política de cambio climático."

Scott dice que el Día de la tierra es un buen momento para reconocer el trabajo necesario para enfrentar los próximos retos, incluido el cambio climático global y potencial capacidad para crear enormes impactos en factores como el agua en el Oeste.
