El Día de la Tierra 2009 da a los californianos motivo para celebrar

Mientras los californianos celebran felices este miércoles el Día de la Tierra, uno de los que ayudó a organizar la conmemoración de esta fecha por primera vez, hace 39 años, echa una mirada retrospectiva al camino recorrido y ve qué lejos hemos llegado. Doug Scott, director de políticas en la Campaign for America's Wilderness (Campaña por la Vida Silvestre de América), recuerda cómo ha sucedido todo.

Cuenta que los californianos tenemos una razón más para estar felices, porque el Presidente Obama recién firmó una ley para proteger más de dos millones de acres de área silvestre, incluyendo más de 700 mil acres de tierras públicas en California.

Scott opina que aunque el movimiento ambientalista no nació sino hasta el 22 de abril de 1970, ese día la necesidad de cuidar la conservación dio su primer paso, que fue gigantesco.

"No podíamos imaginar que el primer Día de la Tierra se volvería un evento tan enorme, que involucró a millones de personas. Tuvimos que correr para darle alcance al derroche de interés en torno a todo tipo de tema ambiental."

Este año, uno de los temas centrales en la conmemoración del Día de la Tierra es el poder que tiene un individuo para influir en el cambio, algo de lo que Scott asegura ser testigo de primera mano.

"He visto esto muchas veces en mi trabajo: que personas ordinarias, comunes, que nada más se arremangan la camisa y deciden involucrarse en nuestra democracia, pueden de veras marcar un cambio."

Scott subraya que el "momentum" que se dio el primer día jamás ha desaparecido. Cuenta que los políticos de ambos bandos respondieron positivamente al movimiento creando las leyes del Aire Limpio y del Agua Limpia, así como la Ley de las Especies en Peligro de Extinción.
