Los padres que pierden sus trabajos, o los que tienen dos empleos, manejan un presupuesto familiar estresante. Es así que recesión entra a las familias y muchas veces los niños son las víctimas olvidadas de esta situación.

A medida que se acerca a su fin Abril, "Child Abuse Prevention Month" (Mes de la Prevención del Abuso Infantil), los abogados sacan a la luz el lado oscuro de la recesión en Nuevo México. Elizabeth Davis-Pratt, del Children's Defense Found (Fondo para la Defensa de los Niños), habla sobre un problema serio que se vive en Nuevo México y el país entero. Dice que, a medida que la economía va de bajada, hay un incremento documentado en el abuso y la desatención infantiles.

"Realmente no sorprende que, en tiempos de angustia económica, aumente el estrés en las familias, y eso provoque más reportes y victimización de los niños."

Dice que el estrés de los padres aumenta con la pérdida del empleo o la amenaza de perder la vivienda, y a veces tal tensión se desahoga con los niños.

Davis-Pratt agrega que hay muchas maneras en las que los neomexicanos pueden ayudar.

"Todos pueden colaborar. Pueden buscar y aconsejar a padres con hijos pequeños, encontrar agencias públicas o no lucrativas y hacer trabajo voluntario o hacer donativos en especie."

Tan solo entre julio y octubre de 2008, finaliza Davis-Pratt, hubo más de 2 mil trescientos casos de abuso y desatención infantil en Nuevo México.
