Charleston, WV - A new measure signed into law this winter by President Obama soon will send a large influx of volunteers to communities across the nation, including several in West Virginia. The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act will expand the AmeriCorps VISTA programs by tripling the number of service members annually for the next eight years. The national service program is designed to fight poverty, and the additional funding is well-timed, since according to AmeriCorps VISTA, the recession has driven many more people to ask for help.

Jill Kriesky, with the Clifford Lewis Appalachian Institute at Wheeling Jesuit University, coordinates one group of volunteers. Known as "recovery VISTAS," they will focus on helping public-service nonprofit organizations that find themselves under pressure because of the economy, she says.

"Here in Wheeling, people don't have enough to eat, and we have a number of food resource programs. One of the things the VISTA person might do is bring together all the leaders of those programs."

At least four recovery VISTA members will be based at colleges around the state, where they can involve students in various projects, adds Kreisky.

"One of the roles of a VISTA member might be to do some research on possible sources of funding and maybe even some grant writing for those organizations. "

VISTA members earn about $9,000 a year, which Kriesky calls "poverty wages for working with poor people."
