Weekend Food Drive: Bigger Goals, Bigger Need

Portland, OR – Letter carriers say this Saturday may be the toughest day of the year for them – but it's also the most rewarding. The largest canned-food drive in the nation takes place May 9. All you have to do is set a sturdy bag full of nonperishable food near your mailbox, and the U.S. Postal Service takes it from there.

Kevin Card is a letter carrier here in Oregon. He says the growing need is obvious on many routes.

"Anytime things get tough, we get to see what's out there. We see, firsthand, people who aren't going to work anymore; the kind of turmoil that our economy's in. We have a pretty good feel for what's happening in our communities, on a day-to-day basis."

Card adds that the Postal Service is also having its share of tough economic times. In his area, he says no one has been hired full-time for two years. A letter carrier in the Portland area for 25 years, Card says the food drive is his favorite day on the job. This year's goal in Oregon is 1.75 million pounds of food, and it will take a small army to collect and sort through it.

"It's not just letter carriers that are doing this. There are a whole host of volunteers when we get back to our office that help us unload our vehicles. It really takes a lot of people to make this work, and we're very appreciative of all those volunteers."

The donations collected on Saturday will end up at the closest Oregon Food Bank network location. If you happen to miss it, or if your bag of food is not picked up, you can take it to any post office by May 13.
