Mother’s Extra Little Helper Available in ID

Boise, ID – This Mother’s Day, Idahoans are being asked to check in with senior relatives to see if they could qualify for a new prescription drug program. The Medicare "Extra Help" program could save an average $4,000, and is available to those, 65 and older, with limited incomes and resources. Because of the recession, many more Idahoans are likely eligible, but aren't aware.

AARP Idaho president Peggy Munson says folks like her have watched their safety savings and 401k plans shrink.

"That’s the money you pay your property taxes with, or if something unforeseen happens, then you have to get into the pot. But, it’s not there anymore."

Older-generation Idahoans are often proud and sometimes reluctant to ask for help, says Munson, so it takes the watchful eyes of friends and relatives to get them the help they qualify for.

"They’re skipping their drugs; they’re just scraping by. We can’t go back, at our age, and earn. It’s unfair, almost, for us to go out there and take a job a young person should have."

Medicare "Extra Help" pays for all or most of prescription drug premiums and deductibles, and it lowers co-payments. Idaho families can contact the Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors offered by the State of Idaho for more information.
