Portland, OR – Un ramo de flores constituye un bonito regalo del Día de las Madres, pero se marchita en pocos días. No así el regalo que toda esta semana se está dando a mujeres de Oregon en situación de maternidad; por el contrario, este regalo perdura toda una vida.

Se trata del trabajo que el "Maternal Moms Team" (Equipo de Mamás Maternales) está desarrollando entre mujeres a punto de ser madres, y mamás primerizas que no tienen acceso a los mismos recursos financieros ni médicos de los que dispone la mayoría de las familias de Oregon.

Dora Montgomery, quien es trabajadora social además de integrante de la organización CareOregon (Cuidados Oregon), explica que su mejor regalo para las madres es trabajar respondiendo sus preguntas y orientándolas en temas de salud. Agrega que muchas preguntas son comunes para todas las mamás, pero otras son un verdadero reto.

"Cómo pueden darle pecho a su bebé, dónde pueden conseguir fórmula, qué hacer para encontrar un médico, porque no están acostumbradas a encontrar un médico."

Montgomery dice que también les dan tips de seguridad como cuidar que el calentador de agua esté a 120 grados Fahrenheit o menos para prevenir quemaduras, tener las áreas donde duerme el bebé libres de almohadas suaves y sin demasiados juguetes, y a dónde pedir ayuda telefónica si sienten la depresión post-parto.

El "Maternal Moms Team" (Equipo de Mamás Maternales) es parte de CareOregon (Cuidados Oregon) y su labor está trascendiendo esta semana. Montgomery explica que el trabajo con madres de esta organización, que tienen bajos ingresos, intenta asegurar la buena salud tanto de las madres como de los bebés.

"Creemos que podemos brindar el servicio a nuestras mamás, para que puedan llevar una vida más saludable. Las mamás saludables tienen bebés saludables."

El "Maternal Moms Team" se especializa en ayudar a mamás con enfermedades crónicas y a otras que necesitan un poco más cuidados que el promedio. Montgomery dice que las investigaciones demuestran que, a la larga, la inversión resulta redituable para todos, en términos de cuidados de salud a bajo costo y gastos en educación.
