Voter Poll: CA Asian Americans May Be Untapped Environmental Powerhouse

California's Asian-American voters say "yes" to the environment. While a little more than half of voters statewide consider themselves environmentalists, a whopping 83 percent of Asian-American voters fall into that category.

A new first-of-its-kind survey by the California League of Conservation Voters Education Fund found the majority of these voters also identify global warming as a top concern. Pollster Ben Tulchin says they not only talk the talk, but are willing to walk the walk.

"Eighty-five percent of Asian Americans said that they would be likely to either vote for a ballot measure to protect the environment; another 80 percent said they would vote for a candidate that has a strong environmental record."

Asian Americans make up 12.5 percent of California's population and are the fastest-growing major racial or ethnic group in the state. The CLCV plans to meet with Asian-American and environmental groups to encourage them to translate the survey results into a plan of action.

The poll also found Asian Americans believe strongly that government should take an active role in protecting air, land and water. CLCV executive director James Lau says that is why the poll results should be a wake-up call for lawmakers.

"Knowing that Asian Americans do care deeply about the environment and they're willing to take action, such as voting for measures, should be an incentive for policymakers to include them as part of the discussion."
