Congress Clean Energy Debate: Plenty At Stake for West

Las Vegas, NV – Congress is expected to turn its attention to clean energy today with a bill that would cap global warming emissions. Proponents says the measure would bring green jobs to Nevada and the nation and curb the worst impacts of global warming, but business leaders fear the new rules would be costly. The bill aims to cut greenhouse gas emission by 17 percent over the next decade and by 83 percent by 2050.

The U.S Chamber of Commerce warns that the measure will be expensive and the new rules would likely result in lawsuits, but Dan Geary, the Nevada representative of the Pew Environment Group, says the measure would help the nation move to a new clean energy economy. Geary says Southwestern states are already seeing water supplies threatened by global warming, and the bill would help states like Nevada profit from being part of the solution.

"It helps us with the security and stability of water supplies, and the Southwest will be at the epicenter of much of the development of new clean energy systems. "

The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 would also set a 20 percent renewable-energy and energy-efficiency standard by the year 2020.

As Congress begins its debate, a new nationwide survey of voters shows more than 60 percent support such a plan. Phyllis Cuttino of the Pew Environment Group says support is even stronger when money goes to research and development and to fund an energy tax credit for consumers.

"The American voter believes very strongly that global warming is happening; it's happening now, and
they want members of Congress and this government to take action to reduce global warming emissions."

Cuttino says the legislation will produce millions of clean energy jobs, not just for factory workers but also for engineers, secretaries and researchers. The poll was paid for by the Pew Environment Group.
