Study: Growing Health Costs Shrinking Minnesota Family Incomes

Washington D.C./Northfield, MN – Health care costs are taking a bigger bite out of Minnesota family budgets, according to a new 50-state study by Families USA. It finds over 1.1 million Minnesotans live in families who spend more than 10 percent of their pre-tax income on health care costs. It also states most of those affected have insurance.

Spokesman Ron Pollack says the cost is becoming too much to bear, even for working families with medical coverage.

"This year, there will be approximately 1,144,000 Minnesotans who will spend at least 10 percent of their pre-tax income family on health care."

And, he says almost a third of a million Minnesotans live in families who will pay over a quarter of their pre-tax income on medical costs. The report puts much of the blame on rising health premiums, which are forcing employers to make tough decisions about what, if any, coverage to offer workers. Pollack argues that the growing burden of medical expenses on Minnesota families shows the need for health care reform.

Mike Thorsteinson, spokesman for the Minnesota Community Action Partnership, says soaring health care costs are putting a big squeeze on families trying to meet essential expenses.

"You’re constantly in a crisis mode; juggling between paying the rent, and then, next month, you have a sick child and then the car breaks down. If you want to get to work, you’re going to have to repair that car."

One third of families who file for bankruptcy have medical or other related expenses, while even those with insurance can get buried in co-pays and deductibles. The report recommends subsidies to help moderate-income families afford coverage and more focus on prevention and early treatment to lower costs.
