Stimulus Creating Summer Jobs in Colorado?

Denver - Colorado students or anyone else looking for a little summer work might contact businesses that help keep homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter. That's because some of the stimulus dollars flowing into the state are supporting programs that provide home weatherization assistance. The programs help eligible and low-income families make their homes more efficient.

Pam Packer, director of long-term energy solutions for Energy Outreach Colorado (EOC), says they hope to double their efforts, and that means a lot more work for some local Colorado businesses.

"We're working with local window installers, boiler installers and so on to install all the energy efficiency measures."

More funding for weatherization also means more help for Coloradans beyond the Front Range and other major population centers, says Packer.

"We can reach far more people and, particularly, in parts of the state that are sometimes hard to reach."

Weatherization is about more than just plastic on the windows and caulk around the seams, she adds.

"Boiler replacements, window replacements, CFL installation. In some instances we fund new appliances."

Critics argue the stimulus spending is wasteful in a time of massive deficits, but EOC says it is an opportunity to demonstrate how a consistently high-level of funding for weatherization can create jobs and stimulate the economy through energy savings over the long-run. More information on weatherization programs is available at www.energyoutreach.org.
