Richmond - A study of air pollution and pollen has found that Richmond is among the nation's most-challenging cities for those living with asthma. Also, nearly 18 percent of homes with children across the state report at least one child with the disease, according to the report by Asthma Foundation of America.

David DeBiasi is a registered nurse and a certified asthma educator. He says it's important for parents to share with educators and other caregivers a detailed plan of what to do when their children's asthma symptoms flare up.

"Some kids only cough as an asthma symptom and those who aren't educated would think, well that can't be asthma. But, it's very important to pinpoint what the child's symptoms are, how they present, and then determine what's the first course of action. And, when that action doesn't work, what to do next."

While asthma is common, it can be deadly, warns DiBiasi, who adds, however, it is treatable.

"Asthma is fairly complicated in terms of what families are asked to do; to self-assess, to figure out what treatments need to be done, when to step those treatments up, and when to call the doctor. So much can be lost."

The Asthma Foundation of America urges parents to keep close track of symptoms and triggers so they can help control asthma attacks. The American Lung Association in Virginia provides asthma awareness and management kits for free. Information is at .
