American Heart Association Makes Big Push for CPR Training

Sioux Falls, SD – This is National CPR and AED week, and to celebrate it the American Heart Association has set a goal to train a million people to save heart attack victims. Sioux Falls bank teller and part-time sheriff's deputy Samantha Grace knows firsthand the importance of CPR training, after using the procedure to help save the life of a fellow employee on a wintry day in January of 2008. She arrived at the bank on a snowy morning and was greeted by senior vice-president Bob Fylling who was cleaning the sidewalks. Grace, who was on the phone a short time later with a customer, said she was called to help with CPR on Fylling after he suffered a heart attack.

"I got yelled at to come back and help Bob because he was having a heart attack. He was sitting in his chair kind of going in and out and gasping for breath. Me and other customers that were here that day laid him on the floor and began CPR while my supervisor dialed 911 and got the ambulance here."

Grace, who also is training to become a law enforcement officer, says that CPR is a life-saving skill that everyone should know.

"Working down at the jail it's very handy to know. They teach us that once a year down there, so that way, if we're ever out and about just, you know, walking down at the fair or out on the road and see somebody having a heart attack, we know what to do."

The American Heart Association is encouraging the public to learn CPR and become familiar with Automated External Defibrillators, AEDs. They list a number of ways to become CPR-trained using either a traditional classroom-based course or a self-paced 'CPR Anytime' kit, which includes an inflatable mannequin to practice on, and an instructional DVD. People can also locate a local training center, or order a home CPR instruction kit online, at
