Food HelpLine Launched in Minnesota

St. Paul, MN – Minnesotans in need of nutrition have a new tool. The "Minnesota Food HelpLine" is now active - a service designed to provide vital information to those at risk of hunger.

Jill Hiebert with Hunger Solutions Minnesota says it will help determine eligibility for food support and other programs, and guide applicants through the process.

"There tends to be confusion. A great number of people are eligible for food support who are not enrolled. We know that, with a little assistance, we can get some more people enrolled - especially senior citizens."

Hiebert notes that some people are reluctant to ask for help, but she says they shouldn't be because food support is the basis of the public safety net. She estimates a third of those eligible are not participating.

Another benefit, she says, is that higher food support program enrollment will bring millions of federal dollars into the state and take pressure off the state budget. The HelpLine phone number is 888-711-1151.

Hunger has been growing in Minnesota over the past five years, Hebert says, with food shelf use soaring in recent months.

"In the first quarter of this year, we've seen visits increasing by a third. About 327,000 people are enrolled right now, and thousands and thousands visit the food shelves every day."

Hebert attributes the increase in food shelf traffic to under- and unemployment, and to the rising costs of other necessities such as transportation, housing and health. Another downside of food insecurity, she warns, is that families often do not get a nutritious diet, which is dangerous for both children and adults.
