WI Conservationists: Protect Green Jobs

Madison, WI - When the state Assembly takes up the budget this week, a program that has been instrumental in creating green jobs, promoting energy independence and protecting natural resources is in the crosshairs. Conservationists are asking lawmakers to restore money for the Wisconsin Energy Independence Fund. In the first budget round, the Joint Finance Committee stripped all funding for the program.

Jennifer Giegerich, Capitol liaison for the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters says this program is responsible for helping Flambeau River Paper make the transition to become the first pulp and paper mill in the nation to operate without fossil fuels.

"That's where 300 workers had been laid off the previous year, so this is an incredibly important program and we hope that legislators will reconsider it."

Thanks to the program, those workers were able to return to their jobs at the Park Falls plant.

Those supporting the nearly 15 million dollar cut say tough times require tough choices, but Giegerich says this program is a win-win.

"And we hope that, given the fact that it is good for workers and it is good for the environment, we have a chance at restoring even a little bit of funding for this critical program."

Giegerich is encouraging lawmakers to invest in clean home-grown energy, which she says is critical to transitioning Wisconsin to a 21st century economy.

"So legislators are expected to take up the budget in the next day or so, and we're asking members of the Assembly to consider re-funding even a small part of this critical program."

Giegerich says grants and loans awarded from the Wisconsin Energy Independence Fund are meant to develop the next generation of technologies that can be used to grow green energy businesses and put Wisconsinites to work.
