Affordable Housing Eases Illinois Seniors Into Retirement

Chicago, IL - People used to regard retirement as a time to relax and unwind, but in these economic times it's no longer the case for those who are struggling financially. Finding affordable housing in retirement is not easy for seniors who generally live on lower incomes.

Lisa Ingalls, associate executive director of housing at Lutheran Social Services of Illinois says many seniors with incomes of $25,000 a year or less are struggling to find housing that fits their budgets.

"We were working with a lady to move her into one of our affordable buildings; she was surviving on coffee and popcorn and taking her medication every other day."

Ingalls says subsidized housing can relieve seniors of financial stress and give them a new lease on life.

"They play cards, they socialize, they watch the Cubs games, they go shopping together."

Ingalls says that once elders find affordable housing they are able to live full and active lives. The problem is that there are not enough apartments available.

"There are huge waiting lists at most of our buildings. For our building in Rockford, the waiting list is 120 people, and that building has just 60 apartments."

Ingalls says housing units built by Lutheran Social Services are one example of how federal grants can help seniors live independently for as little as two hundred dollars a month.

Congress is working on funding affordable senior housing through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Agencies such as Lutheran Social Services provide the apartments with that funding.
