Los Ángeles, CA – Personas que quieren dejar de fumar pueden tomar el primer paso sin que les cueste nada. Empieza una campaña en el condado de Los Ángeles para ayudar a que sus residentes dejen de fumar. El Departamento de Salud Pública del Condado de Los Ángeles, la compañía de Supermercados Ralph y la organización L.A. Health Care Plan (Plan de Cuidado de Salud de L.A.), juntos participarán en la campaña 'Los Ángeles deja de Fumar' (L.A. Quits) la cual regalará 30,000 kits de parches y goma de mascar de nicotina.

Fumar es la causa número uno de muertes prevenibles en los Estados Unidos, y en el condado de Los Ángeles, una de cada seis muertes son relacionadas con el tabaco. La Dr. Elaine Batchlor es la Directora General de Salud con la organización Plan de Cuidado de Salud de L.A.

"Tratar de dejar de fumar es algo muy difícil y tratar de hacerlo sin ayuda y apoyo probablemente no funcionará. El dejar de fumar de un día al otro usualmente no funciona."

La Dra. Batchlor también indicó que una persona puede duplicar su chance de poder dejar de fumar utilizando los parches y goma de mascar de nicotina y utilizando una línea gratuita de apoyo.

"Existe una línea de apoyo llamada la Línea de Ayuda para Dejar de Fumar de California: 1-800-NoButts. Esa es otra manera muy efectiva como apoyo para poder dejar de fumar y para el resto de la familia y amigos."

Mencionó La Dra. Batchlor que fumar no solo es un hábito que causa muerte, sino que también es uno que es bastante caro. Una persona que fuma un paquete de cigarros al día se gasta unos dos mil dólares al año en cigarros. Estos kits serán distribuidos en los supermercados Ralph participantes hasta que se agoten.
