Phoenix, AZ – A summer project for everyone – spend some time volunteering. It's the call going out today as President Obama kicks off his "United We Serve" initiative. Cynthia Zwick, executive director of the Arizona Community Action Association, says that, with the state's struggling economy, volunteer help is needed at food banks, churches, and government agencies.

"There are needs for volunteers throughout the community. We're being told the Department of Economic Security, in fact, could use volunteers with some screening and greeting kinds of tasks."

Zwick says getting Arizonans back on their feet after the recession will very much rely on volunteers, because nonprofits, agencies, and assistance groups are stretched to meet the needs.

"We're seeing the increase in requests across the state range from an increase of about 40 percent to an increase of almost 300 percent."

Zwick says it's best to decide how you want to help before making calls. Some can help with administrative duties, or hands-on construction and repairs, or providing transportation. Arizonans can connect to agencies looking for volunteers at choosetohelp.org

United We Serve runs through the National Day of Service and Remembrance, September 11th.
