WI Environment: Important EPA Deadline Looms

Madison, WI - This is the last day you can have your say on a critical determination by the EPA, one that could impact environmental policy for years to come. The public comment period for an EPA finding naming six greenhouse gases that pose a potential threat to public health ends today; if the finding is finalized after the comment period, it could be a first step to mandating EPA action to reduce those emissions from the worst offenders.

Dan Kohler, state director of Wisconsin Environment, says it's time to act.

"We can certainly be reducing pollution from coal-fired power plants by transitioning over to renewable fuels and energy sources like wind and solar power."

Kohler says public comment is important because many groups have poured tremendous resources into influencing the outcome on this issue.

"We can do this, but the public's got to be involved to push back against folks that want to continue the status quo."

Kohler says the organized opposition on this issue is a very hard force to overcome, which is why, he says, it's important for the public to comment before the deadline today.

"They're lobbying Congress with tremendous clout and access and power, suggesting that we shouldn't act."

The finding that the gases endanger public health and welfare was issued after the EPA was instructed by the U.S. Supreme Court to make a determination. In the case, Massachusetts vs. EPA, the Court found that greenhouse gases are air pollutants covered by the Clean Air Act. Some manufacturers and businesses fear that costly new regulations would cost jobs and stall a recovering economy.
