Health Care Meeting Day Across Big Sky Country

June 29, 2009

HELENA, Mont. – Everyone seems to have an opinion about health care reform, and today is the day for Montanans to get their views on the record. Nine town hall meetings are set for tonight across the state, and Steph Larsen, policy organizer with the Center for Rural Affairs, says they especially want to be sure that Montanans in small communities get their say.

"Montana is such a large state, and it gives people who might not otherwise have access to town hall meetings a chance to talk about health care."

She says the voices of rural Americans need to be heard as the health care system is re-designed, because those people face unique issues.

"There are fewer doctors, nurses, and other health care providers. Sometimes we have a harder time finding health insurance that's affordable and that a doctor who might be in your area would accept."

The Center and 18 other organizations are hosting the town hall meetings, some of which will be linked by teleconference. Larsen says those attending will learn about the latest health care reform proposals and how Montana Senator Max Baucus is a key player in the debate.

People in and near Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Havre, Miles City, Libby, Helena, Missoula and Kalispell will have an opportunity to participate.
