Has New Administration Sparked Increase in MN Gun Sales?

DULUTH, Minn. – One business is booming in Minnesota despite the economic slump: gun sales. The number of background checks performed by the FBI on prospective Minnesota firearms buyers has increased every month since February 2008. A Rasmussen poll reveals that more than half of Americans attribute the rise in gun sales to concern that the Obama Administration will push for tougher gun laws.

The increase in sales is a worry for Joan Peterson of Protect Minnesota. She says guns are getting into the wrong hands.

"Why is it that we have so many guns on the streets that people take revenge by wanting to shoot somebody? Why is that the norm?"

Peterson suggests people are becoming desensitized to all the of shootings in the state. Her solution: Minnesota needs more laws, not more guns.

The National Instant Check System Improvement Bill passed, which requires background checks for mentally-disabled people. But Peterson says the state did not close a broader loophole that permits issuing handgun licenses without background checks at gun shows. Peterson says legislation is needed to make guns less accessible to the wrong people.

"It's a concern we have; we don't think it has to be this way, and we would like to change it. One gun death is one gun death too many."

Gun rights activists say the Rasmussun poll affirms that Americans are stocking up for what they think is an inevitable attack on gun rights - an attack they predict will fail.
