COLUMBUS, Ohio – An effort to increase the availability of fresh food for all Ohioans is ramping up. The Farmer’s Market Access Project offers grants to farmers markets to process food-assistance benefits via the Ohio Direction Card.

So far, 15 farmers markets have signed on, including the Countryside Conservancy in Northeast Ohio. Market manager Beth Knorr says she is proud to be a part of the project.

"We want to make sure that everybody in the community benefits from the food that's available that supports our local growers. It's so important that everybody has access to this fresh, healthy food."

Funding is still available for at least 26 markets. These grants provide funding to install phone and electric lines, develop scrip or tokens for use at the markets and provide outreach to the community to inform the public that the market accepts food assistance.

Amalie Lipstreu, senior program manager, Ohio Department of Agriculture, says everyone benefits from the program, which was formed through a partnership with the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services.

"To get healthy food to people who need it, to help Ohio farmers be more profitable and really help invest in a recession-proof industry in Ohio, really is a win-win."

Lipstreu says the program also works to help educate Ohioans on the importance of homegrown food.

"It's wonderful for people to get to know who grows their food and make the connection back to agriculture. It's not from the grocery store - it actually comes from Ohio farmers."
