ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The annual Kids Count report card puts Missouri 33rd among the states for the well-being of its children, down one spot from last year. The report shows increases in rates of teen pregnancy and of children participating in free and reduced-price school lunches. Scott Gee, the executive director with Citizens for Missouri's Children, says these are indicators of poverty, as more parents have lost their jobs.

"Children are often affected by things that are out of their control. And what needs to turn around to affect child well-being is our economy; we need to get people back to work."

Gee says these numbers don't reflect the most recent economic downturn, so he fears Missouri children may be worse off than originally thought.

The Kids Count report also shows the overall safety of children improved, with teen and child death rates dropping from the previous year. While that's good news, Gee says, there's still work to be done.

"If we don't put children at the forefront of all our discussions, especially political discussions, and ask, 'Is this decision good for the kids or is it going to be harmful to the children?' I think we fail as a society."

The Annie E. Casey Foundation commissions the annual report, which looks at ten factors of child well-being in areas of health, education and juvenile justice.
