New Tool Helps to Empower Ohio Cancer Patients

COLUMBUS, Ohio - If knowledge is power, then Ohio cancer patients have one more tool to empower them in their battles against the disease. The American Cancer Society is providing "Personal Health Manager Kits" free of charge to patients and families, to help them cope with a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

In Union Town, Cindy Dotson is caring for a son who has cancer. It can be hard to remember all the little details, she says, with so many specialists and medications.

"Your mind has so much going on, and you're worried about things, and this is a great way to help you feel more in control at a time when you are feeling overwhelmed."

The kits help organize a patient's appointments, test results, insurance paperwork, bills and other key documents. Westerville resident Eric Landversicht's mother has been battling cancer for nearly three years. As a caregiver, he can keep helpful notes in the kit as well, he says.

"A lot of times when you go from a doctor's office to another doctor's office, the medical records within the system aren't fast enough. This way, we've got it with us, right at our fingertips and right there to help."

To Landerversticht, it's a simple tool that can make dealing with a cancer diagnosis a bit less daunting.

"I don't see how a person can fight the cancer battle and not have great resources. My mother has been able to focus really on fighting her disease and not having to worry about all the little things along the way."

The Personal Health Manager Kits also provide information on other services provided through the American Cancer Society, including patient navigators, support groups and online classes. So far, more than 1600 Ohio cancer patients have received the kits. To learn more, call 1-800-227-2345.
